Walk Southeast Registration Open through May 6

It’s nearing time to Walk Southeast! Registration for the 5th Annual Walk Southeast is open now through May 6 with the virtual trek to Ketchikan beginning on May 1. See what Southeast Alaska community you can 'walk' to by September 1 by tracking the miles your walk, run or hike through the summer. You'll earn tickets for the prize drawings along the way and be entered to win a 1-night stay at Amalga Cabin or great gear and swag from our sponsors. Walk at least 150 miles and you'll be eligible for the Alaska Airlines for two round-trip tickets. Participation is free. Walk Southeast. Fly Alaska!

Final Free Skate | May 5

Don’t hang up your skates just yet. There's time for one more free skate! Come celebrate the end of another great season at the final free skate on May 5 from 5 - 6:30 p.m. at Treadwell Arena. Admission and skate rental are free thanks to our sponsor, Alaska Auto Repair. Skate rentals are limited and are first-come, first-served.

Registration for Family Beach Exploration Opens May 3

Get your feet wet with a family-friendly beach exploration at the Jensen-Olson Arboretum on Saturday, May 11 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. This free event, organized by Friends of the Jensen-Olson Arboretum in partnership with Parks & Recreation, will take place during low tide, offering the perfect chance to see the beach habitat in action. This program is geared toward children ages 6-12 and their families. Please keep in mind that all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Admission is free but registration is required; space is limited to 20 children. Registration opens online through the Parks & Rec registration catalog (click the "Youth & Teen" tab) on Friday, May 3 at noon.

Walk Southeast Kick-Off | May 5

Join us on May 5 at Twin Lakes to kick off the 5th Annual Walk Southeast! Meet Parks & Recreation staff, add a mile or two to your tracker with a walk along the lake, and put your name in the hat for a Walk Southeast t-shirt. For those using My Virtual Mission, this is a great opportunity to ask questions and get some hands on assistance setting it up. Stop by any time between 1 – 2:30 p.m.; door prizes will be drawn throughout and a #teamjuneau photo will be taken around 2.

Movie in the Park | Wish (PG) on May 3

Your wish has come true! Movie in the Park heads to Dimond Park Field House on May 3 for a free, family-friendly show presented by Juneau Pediatric Dentistry. The doors open at 5:45 p.m. and Wish (PG) begins at 6 p.m. Pillows and blankets are welcome to get comfortable, however food and drink, other than water, are not allowed on the turf.

New Diving Club at DPAC

Starting May 14, the pool will offer introductory and advanced classes in springboard diving. Both classes will take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings from May 14 to June 6. The cost is $80 + tax for 8 lessons. Participants must be 8 years of age or older, and 10 spaces are available in each class. Register online through the Parks & Rec registration catalog (click under the Juneau Pools tab) starting Wednesday, May 1 at noon.

Dimond Park Field House Track Hours Change May 3

The track at Dimond Park Field House will be adjusting its hours starting Friday, May 3. The track will be open to the public Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The track will be closed on weekday evenings, Sundays and holidays. DPAC Closed April 29 - May 12

Dimond Park Aquatic Center will be closed Monday, April 29 through Sunday, May 12 for annual maintenance that will include include draining and refilling all three pools, re-lamping the natatorium and underwater lights, servicing equipment, deep cleaning the pool deck, and tile work. During the closure, Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool will be open to the public. For more information about AGB hours and activities, see the calendar at juneaupools.org. DPAC will reopen to the public on Monday, May 13.

Youth Floorball Coming to Treadwell Arena

Parks & Recreation is adding Floorball to the Youth Sports lineup! Floorball that takes place at Treadwell Arena from June 3 - 26 while the ice it out. There will be two division of play: 8-10 years and 11-14 years. Players will need to attend a mandatory skills clinic on May 22 to learn some basics of the game. Then teams will have one 1-hour session each week on Monday or Wednesday evening that includes 15 minutes of skills followed by 3 12-minute periods of game play. Registration for the season opens at 8 a.m. on May 6 and costs $45 + tax. Find more information on the Floorball webpage.

Summer Swim Lessons Placement Day | May 11, 14, & 16

Starting this summer, swimmers must meet prerequisites to sign up for classes at Level 2 or higher. That means either:

• Successfully passing the previous class level at Juneau Pools since November 2023, OR
• Attending a Juneau Pools swim lesson placement session

During placement, swim instructors will work with children in small groups to provide coaching and help identify their skill and comfort level in the water. Placement takes just 15 minutes and several days are available this month:

• Saturday, May 11, 12:30 – 2 p.m. at Augustus Brown Pool
• Tuesday, May 14, 4:15 – 6:15 p.m. at Dimond Park Aquatic Center
• Thursday, May 16, 4:15 – 6:15 p.m. at Dimond Park Aquatic Center

Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge Trail) Work Begins April 17

Work will begin on Wednesday, April 17 on the Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge Trail) Improvements project. This project, led by the State of Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities, will reconstruct the northern portion of the trail between Montana Creek and River Road trailhead and replace the pedestrian bridge over Montana Creek. Construction is currently expected to last through September. The trail between River Road and Montana Creek, as well as the immediate bridge site, will be closed to the public for the duration of construction. Please obey all posted trail closure signs and barricades for the safety of yourself and others.

New Pay-By-Phone Parking Begins March 27

Beginning Wednesday, March 27 a new pay-by-phone option will be available for CBJ’s hourly parking lots in Downtown Juneau, including Shopper’s Lot, North Franklin Lot, and the Marine Park Garage (Level 1). No changes are being made to parking fees ($0.75 per hour) or enforcement hours (8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday).

Using the free ParkSmarter app, customers can now pay for parking with a credit or debit card, add time to a parking session, and obtain receipts. The free app is available for download on both iOS and Android devices. For more information, visit the parking website.

Commercial Use Applications

Late applications for 2024 commercial use permits are accepted and are subject to a $250 late fee beginning April 1. Commercial use permits authorize commercial activity on CBJ parklands. There is a non-refundable $250 application fee for the first location and a $100 application fee for every additional location from the same vendor. Reduced Hours at Pipeline Skate Park

In order to address safety concerns stemming from a sharp increase in vandalism and drug paraphernalia litter on park grounds, Jackie Renninger Park (Pipeline Skate Park) will be open for reduced hours until further notice. Starting immediately, the park will be open from 3:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on weekends. All gates and facilities will be closed outside these hours of operation. Park staff and JPD will also be conducting extra patrols in the park.
