It is the policy of the CBJ to build a sustainable community that endures over generations and is sufficiently far-seeing and flexible to maintain the vital and robust nature of its economic, social, and environmental support systems. CBJ Comprehensive Plan, Policy 2.1.
Sustainability is a concept whose objective is to improve and maintain the quality of life for both present and future generations. At its core is an approach to development that looks to balance social, environmental and economic interests.
Sustainable development provides an approach to making better decisions on the issues that affect all of our lives. Current decision-making tends to separate economic, social and environmental factors, with economic factors often being the most dominate of the three. In sustainable decision-making, social, environmental and economic issues are considered simultaneously, without one dominating over the other, but recognizing that limited tradeoffs among the different interests may be necessary.
Sustainable communities are places where people thrive, enjoy good health and create a lasting high quality of life. Where people of different ages, income levels, and cultural backgrounds share environmental, social, and economic opportunities equally. Where industry and economic opportunities emphasize healthy, environmentally sound practices that benefit present and future generations. Source: Maryland Sustainable Communities Act of 2010
Climate change, and how we deal with it, is another factor in sustainability. Climate change is already affecting, and will continue to affect, all of us locally and globally. In our homes, workplaces or businesses, we can all make small changes that will contribute to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and do more to prepare for the coming changes to our environment.
