Juneau Sister Cities Committee

Juneau Sister Cities Committee

The Juneau Sister Cities Committee is currently soliciting input from Juneau residents and organizations about interest in Juneau’s sister city relationships. Created in September 2008, this committee advises the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly. The results of this survey will guide the committee in its recommendations to the Assembly. This survey in no way constitutes a financial commitment from the City and Borough of Juneau regarding travel or Sister Cities activities.

Juneau's Sister Cities

The primary purpose of sister city relationships is to encourage citizen exchanges and to develop ongoing relationships between the city governments, organizations and citizens. Sister city projects can include education exchanges, art or music exchanges, training and internships, and economic development. Juneau’s five sister cities are:

  • Whitehorse, Canada
  • Vladivostok, Russia
  • Chia-Yi, Taiwan
  • Camiling, Philippines
  • Mishan City, China

1. Whitehorse, Canada [Click here for Whitehorse Survey]
Since the sister city relationship began in 1989, there have been regular meetings between the Juneau Assembly and the Whitehorse City Council. A number of citizen exchanges have occurred in the past, and there are ongoing sports exchanges between the two cities.

2. Vladivostok, Russia [Click here for Vladivostock Survey]
Vladivostok is located in southeastern part of the Russian Far East in the Primorsky Krai, and it has a population of 594,701. The sister city agreement with Vladivostok was signed in 1991, but the relationship began a year earlier when Mayor Botelho visited the Russian Far East with a small delegation. The relationship has involved visits of official delegations, citizen exchanges, art exchanges, student and teacher exchanges, and training programs. There have been no official exchanges in recent years, but Vladivostok recently contacted Juneau to encourage future exchanges.

3. Chia-Yi, Taiwan [Click here for Chia-Yi Survey]
Chia-Yi County is located in Southwestern Taiwan with a population of 548,800. The sister city relationship began in 1988 after former Mayor Polly visited Taiwan. Most of the exchanges with Chia-Yi have been educational, and for many years educators from Chia-Yi would attend sessions at the University of Alaska Southeast. There have been no exchanges in recent years.

4. Camiling, Philippines [Click here for Camiling Survey]
Camiling is located in the Central Luzon Region, and it has a population of 145,538/ The sister city relationship with Camiling began in the 1980s in response to a recommendation from a Juneau citizen who used to live in the community. There is no record of official exchanges, and there appears to be little interest in this sister city relationship from the Juneau Filipino community.

5. Mishan City, China [Click here for Mishan City Survey]
Mishan City is located in the Heilongjiang Province in the People’s Republic of China. Juneau became a sister city with Mishan City in 2001 because this community is also a sister city to Vladivostok. There has been some official contact between the two cities, but no major exchanges have occurred.

6. La Paz, Mexico [Click here for La Paz Survey]
Juneau recently received a solicitation of interest from La Paz, Mexico for establishment of a sister city relationship. If there is adequate community interest, the Sister City Committee may recommend that the Assembly approve reciprocal visits between La Paz and Juneau to determine if there should be a sister city relationship.

If there is little interest in an existing sister city relationship, the Juneau Assembly may choose to terminate the relationship or place it in an emeritus status. If this were to occur, it may be feasible to establish one or more new sister cities.
