Composting: Keep it out of the landfill

  • The EPA estimates that food waste now accounts for 21% of the American waste stream, overtaking either discarded plastic or paper.
  • Landfilled organic matter quickly decomposes, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas that is 23 times more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide.
  • The US EPA has identified landfills as the single largest source of methane, contributing approximately 34% of all man-made methane released to the atmosphere in the US.
  • Food production accounts for 10% of total energy use, 50% of land use, and 80% of freshwater consumption in the US, every wasted bite squanders these resources.

School Outreach

RecycleWorks is working with the Harborview Elementary on a school composting program.

Harborview students began composting in January 2016. The fourth and fifth graders are composting their food scraps, maintaining, monitoring and measuring temperature on the compost pile and will be training the other grades this year. The compost is used in their garden beds to provide organic matter to grow potatoes, peas, herbs, rhubarb, carrots, greens, and much more in about 15 planter beds on their property. The students harvest the food and eat it!

  • RecycleWorks is working on evaluating capital and operational costs of a centralized composting facility for the community. Stay tuned this fall for more information!
