Ask a Dispatcher
Q. I just read a bulletin from the other day that said, "so and so was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated" is that different from a DUI?
Dear Juneau Resident,
The formal title of the state law is "Operating a Vehicle, Aircraft, or Watercraft while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, inhalant, or controlled substance." That's a little awkward for regular conversation. The title of the city ordinance is the relatively concise, "Driving while Under the Influence." For most discussions DWI and DUI are probably interchangeable but DUI (driving under the influence) is arguably more correct because the word intoxicated (as in Driving While Intoxicated) is not in the title of either state law or city ordinance.
