Q. What are the regulations in Alaska ( Juneau ) regarding private party gun sales?
Dear Juneau Resident,
Most laws about firearms transfers are federal laws and apply to gun dealers. However, there are some laws and some common sense guidelines for private sales.
Alaska prohibits any person from knowingly selling or transferring a concealable firearm to any person convicted of a felony or whose physical or mental condition is substantially impaired by liquor or controlled substances.
It's always good to remember that firearms, like jewelry and expensive electronics, are favorite theft items for those people committing burglaries and looking for a quick turn around to fund a drug habit. It would be smart to do a bill of sale with the gun serial number and some ID referenced on it, like a driver's license number, from both buyer and the seller. If you are buying you will want to make sure the seller got the gun legitimately. If you become suspicious, you can call JPD and ask if that gun was reported stolen.
