Q. can anything be done about the people who insist in stopping on the corner of egan when turning onto mendahall loop rd,maybe a do not stop on corner sign,i know their trying to get to superbear, but thats a major wreck waiting to happen.
Dear Juneau Resident,
There doesn't seem to be an obvious answer to your concern. It wouldn't be appropriate to tell people not to stop because there is a crosswalk on that corner. Lane changes are allowed a very short distance onto Mendenhall Loop Road. People may jockey for lane changes either to turn on Mall Road toward Superbear or to get into the other lane to turn on to Atlin.
Your complaint is similar to other ones concerning over-yielding by drivers. Those situations can be frustrating for some but, statistically, collisions are much more likely to be caused by speeding and aggressive driving rather than people slowing or even stopping when not required to do so.
Those statistics are in line with JPD's experience with that area. Collisions have been along the lines of drivers speeding through that curve and either hitting cars in the left lane or losing control and going off the road on one side or the other, including onto the bike path side. Cars crashing onto the bike path is one of the scariest developments we see.
Because of the behavior you have seen it is certainly and area where drivers need to be aware of other vehicles stopping or slowing, a time for defensive driving.
