Q. Wondering why JPD never showed up to the huge party out at Sunshine Cove over the weekend? According to an young attendee I know (who makes poor social choices), there were excessive amounts of drugs and alcohol going around and numerous reports of drunk drivers on the road? Supposedly it was attended by hundreds of people, so how did JPD miss this one??
Dear Juneau Resident,
We definitely were out there as was US Forest Service law enforcement. JPD responded to a report of a fight and DWIs. We did have to prioritize those calls with all the other calls happening. JPD continues to be out at the scene because the day after the party the event planners had not cleaned up the area.
What JPD can't afford to do is provide free security for someone throwing a party like that. JPD certainly doesn't want to encourage people to throw big parties and expect the police to be responsible for the safety of the guests at tax payer expense. Groups like the Lions pay a fee to have JPD officers at Goldmedal on designated overtime and not responding to other calls for service.
There has been a meeting with the organizers and CCFR, JPD, USFS Law Enforcement and others both of the last two years prior to the event. The organizers are well aware of their responsibilities and potential civil liability if someone is hurt because of an attraction they designed.
If you have an objection to this party you can look up the organizer's names in the Juneau Empire article and contact those individuals. JPD and CBJ have no ordinance that prohibits the event. You could work on getting such an ordinance if you feel there is public support for it.
