Ask a Dispatcher
Q. A big loud man openly traffics illegal substances at Switzer Village. Everyone knows who & what. nothing ever happens. It's been going on for years why?
Dear Juneau Resident,
Drug cases can be frustratingly difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. Often JPD is aware of people that neighbors just 'know' are dealing drugs and we believe the neighbors are right. However, the investigation needs show that person was in possession of drugs and dealing them. This means someone working for the police buys drugs or an undercover officer buys drugs. This may need to happen more than once to prove this person is a dealer.
The people who usually see drugs in a dealer's hands are users who will often remain loyal to the dealer because that person needs to protect the ability to get a 'fix'. Other people may know something and be afraid to cooperate with the police because drugs and violence are often linked.
If you or someone you know can buy drugs from this person and work for the police we would like to hear from you. That is the kind of evidence that stands up in court and allows us to take this person out of circulation.
