Q. Hello, I was on craigslist and I saw a "wanted" add for pallets for some burning man event that used 600 pallets last year. I was under the impression that burning pallets with nails in them was illegal and a big fine for each one. I heard it was out sunshine last year on the beach. Just wondering if anyone would get fined for all the nails?
Dear Juneau Resident,
There was such an event last year and JPD and CCFR had lots of advance notice due to the power of social media. JPD also got some calls from concerned parents worried underage people might go to the event, drink illegally, and have all the associated risks.
Reps from JPD, CCFR, and other city divisions met with the organizers before hand. The three organizers were committed to having the party and there were no legal barriers as long as they met certain standards, like obeying litter laws. We had their names and contact information to set up meetings and issue citations if necessary.
JPD community service officers set up a time for a pre-party inspection of Sunshine Cove, provided for some time to clean up and then re-inspected the area. The organizers may have used a big magnet to get the pallet nails because we didn't find them on the ground.
We also discussed at length with the party planners possible medical issues that could happen, security to keep out underage partiers, and rules about alcohol being sold.
We ended up getting through the event without having to fine anyone.
