Q. Why are Fireworks not sold within city limits?
Dear Juneau Resident,
JPD sent this question over to CCFR Fire Chief Rich Ethridge. Here is his answer!
Fireworks retail shops are prohibited by CBJ ordinance and heavily regulated by the fire code. Fireworks are strictly prohibited on USFS land as well as within 500 feet of residential neighborhoods. Fireworks stands are specifically prohibited in municipalities by statute unless an ordinance is specifically adopted allowing them. Fireworks are fun and entertaining, however they are very hazardous. The CDC estimates in 2005 10,800 documented injuries occurred from fireworks annualy. At this time the CBJ has not been interested in pursuing an ordinance to allow the sales of fireworks.
