Ask a Dispatcher
Q. Is it illegal to park within a certain distance of a fire hydrant or stop sign on a residential street? If so, who enforces that and what is the penalty? Also, if said vehicle or vehicles are blocking traffic is it an issue?
Dear Juneau Resident,
You need to keep an eye out for the yellow curb, granted it can be hard to see in the winter. The yellow curb indicates no parking within four feet of a fire hydrant or within 30 feet of an intersection. If there is no yellow curb then parking is allowed closed than the two distances cited above. Parking in front of a yellow curb or other parking prohibited indicator is a $25 violation. Of course, near an intersection a car cannot park over the white line near a stop sign or on a crosswalk.
Parking is usually enforced by JPD's Community Service Officers. Sometimes patrol officers also write parking tickets.
Any vehicles blocking traffic should be reported to JPD for ticketing, towing, or both.
