Q. Does jpd have a regular eye exam for its officers?? I was sitting at the light at walmart getting on the ramp to egan and the car beside me clearly had expired tags, april expired, behind her was one distracted officer, who for what ever reason didnt notice.
Dear Juneau Resident,
JPD officers do stop cars for expired registration and it is possible the officer did not notice the expired plates. If the infraction was noticed officers know that expired plate stops are only appropriate if time allows. A stop like that is very different from a zero tolerance driving offense like DWI where an officer has to do the stop no matter what else is going on.
Yesterday JPD was responding to both a robbery and sexual assault along with having officers teaching DARE classes in middle schools and handling all the usual disturbances, thefts, etc... It is very possible a traffic stop would have been inappropriate, actually gotten the officer in trouble, if their assignment was a higher priority call or time inflexible.
What you can do next if you are concerned the infraction was just ignored is to call the patrol supervisor. The supervisor will be able to tell if a stop would have been appropriate for not given the total call load at the time.
