Q. Why can't we laminate our Social Security Cards? I'm about twenty and mine's already starting to wear and I don't want to end up accidentally tearing it.
Dear Juneau Resident,
Laminating a social security card obscures the security features built into the card so employers and others may not accept the card. From a law enforcement viewpoint you really should not be carrying your card regularly which is how I'm guessing it's acquiring wear. If the card is lost or stolen it is really easy for someone to steal your identity.
Your social security card should be kept with your other important documents that are too important to risk carrying around. Another document that is similar is your birth certificate.
