Ask a Dispatcher
Q. Hi. I was wondering how you decide which dispatcher will answer these, or is it always the same one? I think the idea is neat to get to interact with dispatchers without being a nuisance. I think it would be cool to have the dispatchers sign the responses, just like they give their names when you call. That is one of the few things that would make your awesome program even better.
Dear Juneau Resident,
That is a very good suggestion and at JPD we need to discuss potential changes in answering Ask A Dispatcher questions. When this program started a couple of years ago one person took on answering the majority of the questions. We had no idea how popular the program would be and that it would continue for years! The chief assigned the dispatch supervisor at the time to answer questions. That's me. I had been come up through the ranks on the sworn (officer) side. This gave lots of experience in the field and on the phone to answer questions, along with a desire to make this program useful and even entertaining at times for users. There was a dispatcher, who has since moved back East, who would fill in sometimes.
Now, things must change this fall because I am off to training for a pretty extensive period, courtesy of the FBI, and plan to return to Juneau to speed on all the latest legal and technical policing trends. It's an academy for municipal police managers complete with academy uniforms, physical training, and cafeteria food along with weigh-ins, opposing forces there.
There will need to be a new person(s) answering these questions and you have had an idea with some traction.
