Q. My neighbor was involved in a car crash involving a fatality a few winters ago. He has never requested the final police report for the accident. His wife seems to think he needs the report. What is your opinion? Does he need the report? If he does, why?
Dear Juneau Resident,
I don't know why your neighbor would need the report. If there comes a time he does need the report for something like a civil suit, it will be obvious to him that he should get a copy of the report. I can also see someone wanting such a report in case there were unanswered questions nagging the person. In that case there might be some healing value in seeing the report.
At JPD we are experienced with the trauma that comes from people being exposed to fatal incidents. If your neighbor doesn't want to revisit those feelings by seeing the report, it might best to just leave him alone. Everyone deals with trauma differently but the most important factor is to let the person involved determine what he or she wants to do.
