Ask a Dispatcher
Q. How long is an RTL/watch out for a vehicle go? I had requested to have JPD keep an eye out for my truck.
Dear Juneau Resident,
It would be best if you call dispatch or the case officer to discuss this. The circumstances that can lead to a vehicle being missing or stolen can vary widely so there isn't a standard response. Here are some extreme examples:
If the car was idling in a driveway with the keys in it and the reporter saw a stranger drive off that situation is probably going to be treated as a clear cut stolen vehicle case. We would get a discription of the car and stranger and look for both until we found them.
At the other extreme, JPD gets calls from people who went out the night before and they thought their car was parked in a certain place and the next morning they can't find it. JPD will keep a look out for the car and if an officer sees it, dispatch will call the reporter. In our experience, those cars usually turn up within 24 hours and we find out the car was with a friend of the caller or parked in a different place from where the reporter remembered parking. In a case like that JPD is going to be conservative with taxpayer's dollars and not use a bunch of resources looking for the car until it's been gone for a significant period.
