Ask a Dispatcher
Q. What was going on in the N Douglas area this morning (10/24 0800) that required 4 + police cars driving by my house going 70+ mph?
Dear Juneau Resident,
That was a high stress call for dispatch and patrol. There was a mentally ill adult male assaulting family members at a residence quite a distance out North Douglas. Dispatchers could mostly hear screaming and the sounds of a fight after the caller apparently dropped the phone. Once officers arrived, the man focused his attack on the officers, which is what officers intended in order to protect the family. Criminal charges are pending after mental health issues are addressed.
Thank goodness JPD had four officers who could go, because it took them all to bring the situation under control. If officers could have sprouted wings to get to the call, they would have. JPD ended up with a good outcome with no one seriously injured and the man will now be forced into treatment. CCFR also responded to provide medical treatment on scene.
Officers go ‘code’ as you witnessed when someone is in extreme jeopardy. There is an inherent risk to driving that fast on North Douglas Highway so it is a carefully considered decision to do so.
