Ask a Dispatcher
Q. I have a Winchester 30-30 rifle that I would like to sell. Are there any restrictions such as licensing or registration that need to be followed?
Dear Juneau Resident,
Holy Cow! Be careful when you ask your local expert on all things gun related a question! By using this program for your question you got to be spared the full account of the Winchester model 1894 lever-action being the Winchester corporationís first machine gun.
Now, for the short answer. If your firearm is legal, not sawed off, converted to full auto, or with a serial number scrubbed off, and you are selling it in the state you donít need to jump through any hoops. If you are selling it out of state, things get a bit more complicated. You can get the full skinny at http://www.atf.treas.gov/pub/fire-explo_pub/qa.pdf. For your own protection, you can note or photograph the serial number, unique marks like scratches, and keep information about the buyer in case the gun is eventually associated with illegal activity and you are questioned about its whereabouts.
