Ask a Dispatcher
Q. Was anybody charged with the death of Rian Orr? I read the report from 8/15, but there was no further update. I'm just curious what happend with the case? That poor baby.
Dear Juneau Resident,
The loss of that child is heart wrenching and we are all very focused on justice being served in that case.
As with almost all high level felonies, there are roles for different agencies and 'who is in charge' gets passed to others at certain times. JPD has finished it's investigation and the case has now passed from our hands to the District Attorney's office. The next decision will be from that agency.
I can't predict the exact course of this case but can address the process in general. Often felony cases go in front of a Grand Jury, who get to weigh in on if the case should go to trial. Then a judge takes responsibility for setting a trial date and deciding what evidence and testimony will be heard at trial. Should the trial happen, the final decisions rest with the jury.
