Q. This beautiful weather can't last forever, and I'm afraid when it's gone, we're going to get slammed by winter! When can I legally start driving around with my studded tires?
Dear Juneau Resident,
You have an excellent point, usually people are getting studded tires put on this time of year. Some of us went ahead and unpacked stored winter sweaters and coats. It's like Christmas that doesn't cost anything! And you make room to pack away those summer clothes Juneau-ites hold onto year after year and never wear out!
Alaska Statutes 28.35.155 says you are good to go if you want to put your studded tires on at the end of the month...even if you don't need them yet. In Juneau, south of the 60 North Latitude, the dates prohibiting studded tires are April 15 through September 30 with the Department of Public Safety having the authority to shorten that prohibition period.
