Ask a Dispatcher
Q. Can you report someone who is driving with a revoked license annonymously or do you have to provide your name
Dear Juneau Resident,
You can report any crime anonymously, through JPD dispatch or Crimeline, but the report does not carry the same weight as one where the person gives their name. There is more information about Crimeline below should you decide it is important to you to be anonymous.
Legal precedent about the use of anonymous tips acknowledges that tips from anonymous people are more likely to be false than one from a named person. That is why the police have a higher obligation to investigate prior to acting on an anonymous tip than with a named witness who can be called into court.
The issue with an officer witnessing someone driving without a license is the officer may not know the person who doesn't have the license by sight. JPD would need a really good description of the driver and some knowledge of how the caller knows the driver's name and that they don't have a license. An anonymous report with no driver description and just a plate number doesn't create a lot of traction for the case.
To remain anonymous you can use the Juneau Crimeline website and fill out at form. The website is http://juneaucrimeline.com/. If you would prefer to call in an anonymous tip through Crimeline, the number is 586-4243.
