Ask a Dispatcher
Q. What is the appropriate course of action for someone hitting your car with their car door in a parking lot? I just had someone slam their door into my new car as I was sitting in a parking lot and then drove off leaving a nice ding in the side. Kind of frustrating watching the first new car I have ever purchased get beat up! Do I need to call JPD to insure there is a report of it in order to have their insurance cover damages?
Dear Juneau Resident,
I’m sorry to hear about your car. Door dings are VERY frustrating and can hardly be avoided when parking spaces are as small as they are. Unfortunately, because the damage is typically unintentional, this is purely a civil issue. You may choose to pursue the person civilly (see below for web address), but most would rather avoid the hassle and will contact their own insurance company for repairs.
Keep in mind, you could always become “that guy” who parks on the far end of the parking lot all by himself in order to minimize the chance of his car becoming another victim of door dings and shopping cart collisions. (Besides, the walk is good for your heart!)
