Q. Does juneau have a law against using the cell phone while driving.I was sitting at the post office and almost every 4th car someone was yaking on their phone.
Dear Juneau Resident,
There are no laws in Alaska prohibiting talking on a cell phone while driving. Only texting while driving is prohibited.
I understand your alarm. JPD would like to encourage drivers to focus on their number one responsibility while driving, operating the vehicle in a manner that keeps everyone in and near the car safe. We hope more and more people will make the decision to pull over or return calls later. Seriously, in Juneau, how long could you possibly be driving before you stop somewhere?
Incidentally, Washington does prohibit talking on a cell phone you are holding to your ear while driving. Hands free cell phone use is legal. So far, that law has not markedly reduced accidents. Some studies suggest hands free cell phone use is just as distracting as traditional cell phone use.
Crafting a law that deals with all distractions to drivers is quite a challenge. You can get involved through the legislative system and by talking to your own family about the issue.
