Q. Are chains legally allowed to be used while driving in Juneau? Is there a season where they are allowed/prohibited?
Dear Juneau Resident,
Chains are legal but very uncommon in Juneau. You might see them on a plow truck every now and then. The situation where you might have an issue is that a driver generally needs to go very slow if chained up. Someone using chains on Egan might be impeding traffic. If you have a house in a rural part of the CBJ and need to crawl up or down an icy hill, chains might be a good option.
There is no season for chains like the designated studded tire season. I think a reasonable person would say the weather for chains is probably sometime within the studded tire season.
