Ask a Dispatcher
Q. we continue to have a caller asking for my elderly mother, not giving the name of why they are calling and keep calling. I am suspicious that they are trying to scam her, when i ask why they want to talk to her they say they will call back. so how can i find if it is a scam and why they are calling and keep them from calling again?
Dear Juneau Resident,
You don't have a way to make him or her tell you if it's an attempted scam but your instincts are probably correct. If the phone is in your name you can call the phone company and ask what they might be able to do to help you. If the caller is a blocked caller you can program the phone to reject the call. If the phone number is coming up, you can ask that the call be blocked.
It is also important to talk to your mother about all the scams that are out there. One elderly woman in Juneau kept giving money to some of these people and would even get dressed up and wait when the callers said they were going to come to her house. It was a very sad situation with overseas scam artists. There wasn't anything law enforcement could do as she voluntarily sent money and even got angry at family members who tried to intervene.
If you do speak with the caller again and the person refuses to identify him or herself, be very clear they are not to call again, even be rude, so the person knows there isn't going to be an easy victim at that number. The person may know there is not much the police can do but tell them you have called the police about the contact and see if that sends them to another target.
