Ask a Dispatcher
Q. Are there any penalties for making false reports or tips? What if it's done anonymously? And if a false report is made against an individual, what action can be taken?
Dear Juneau Resident,
It is really up to the investigating officer to determine if there is anything to an anonymous tip. Some of those tips come from people who have every reason to be afraid of the person that is the subject of the tip. A vast minority of the time, the tipster just wants to mess with someone. Officers are aware of both situations and go into an investigation knowing it could be either one. No one can be charged on the basis of an anonymous tip alone. Anonymous tips carry less weight with law enforcement than tips with a name.
It is an A misdemeanor under CBJ ordinance (42.30.040) and state law (11.56.800) to make a report to the police that the person knows is false.
