Ask a Dispatcher
Q. There was recently a article about drivers going way to fast and speeding down to the glacier I have been concerned about this for a while. So my question is our officers allowed to park on privately owned lots or property if the owner gives permission I have a lot that would be perfect for a speed trap and would like to allow a officer to use this to the advantage of getting people to slow down!! Someone is going to get killed.
Dear Juneau Resident,
This is a very troublesome area and we are deeply concerned, especially after the speed study that showed 7 vehicles in a week going over 65. There was a reading on one going over 80mph. The equipment is not terribly sophisticated, it just reads a vehicle going a certain speed, we don't get pictures or any 'evidence' from it. The device just tells us where to focus speed control efforts.
We certainly appreciate your offer of use of your lot. We only do speed control from private property with permission. You would have to call us with a specific place and we would have to make sure it was appropriate for speed enforcement. JPD does have some options with using a person on foot with a handheld radar and having cars staged to pull over the driver but that obviously takes twice as many people.
The speed study is posted in the JPD briefing room with a notice to do speed work there.
Thank you for writing!
