Ask a Dispatcher
Q. Ive always wondered the true answer to this question... My parents told me that if you are driving on a highway with a posted speed limit of 55 but everyone else is doing 65, you should keep pace with traffic. Is that true?
Dear Juneau Resident,
Sorry, there is not an 'everybody's doing it' exception to laws, including speed restrictions, though the theory has been tested in court many, many times. I imagine the officer in court would fall over if a Judge said, "Oh, everyone else was doing it? You're excused, ticket dismissed." What a precedent that would set!
When there is a lot of speeding going on the odds of getting caught go down since it is possible someone doing enforcement will have to make a decision about which speeder to pull over. The only way to make sure you don't get a ticket is to not speed.
