Q. My brand new fishing rod and reel went missing on Saturday, April 20, near the dredge lake area holding pond. I'm not certain of the intent, but my girlfreind and I were on the other side of the pond and within sight of where I had propped it up on a stump close by the trail, so it seems unlikely to have appeared lost or forgotten. This fishing rig was of substantial value to me and I have documentation to identify it should it be found. I was wondering how I could best affect its recovery? Thanks.
Dear Juneau Resident,
The best course of action is to call 586-0600 and say you want to make a police report. You can also file a report online through this website. Provide as much detail as possible in case the item is turned in or seen at another location. Just recently officers were serving a search warrant on a residence for theft and saw items that seemed out of place but could confirm the items were stolen. Later it was determined that the items were actually stolen and in that case a second search warrant was served but sometimes the person will get rid of the items. Please make your report as soon as possible.
Now, in the area of helping oneself, you are the person who can best recognize the property. You could check secondhand dealers and pawnshops and ask the owner if anyone has tried to pawn your property. They may not give you much information but the managers do call JPD when an owners identifies stolen property. Investigators check pawn and secondhand records but the descriptions don't always make a match obvious. Nothing is quite as good as someone familiar with the property looking for the items.
