Ask a Dispatcher
Q. What does a police "welfare check" consist of and when is it appropriate to request one?
Dear Juneau Resident,
Citizens request welfare checks for a number of reasons. Sometimes a neighbor hasn't been seen for several days. A citizen might see a house that appears to have been entered through a broken door or window. Sometimes someone is acting in an unusual manner and may be having a medical crisis or substance use problem. JPD also gets calls when someone believes another person is suicidal.
The dispatchers and sometimes an officer will try and get detailed information over the phone to determine if there is actually an emergency or if someone is a danger to themselves or others. If it appears something dangerous or illegal could be happening then officers respond to check on the people involved in the situation.
