Community Services Unit

Members of the Community Services Unit perform a variety of duties in our community. The unit is made up of five (5) Community Service Officers (CSO) and two (2) School Resource Officers (SRO). The CSOs are non-sworn staff responsible for municipal code violations which include litter enforcement, parking enforcement, wood-smoke enforcement, and abandoned vehicles. One (1) CSO position is responsible for administering the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Regulations that are applied to the taxi industry, shuttle services and some of the tour bus providers for the summer tourist industry.

The two (2) SROs are responsible for providing education and enforcement throughout the Juneau School District in all schools K-12. The educational opportunities officers provide include D.A.R.E., pedestrian safety, bike safety, and how to use 9-1-1. Officers also participate in classroom discussions about court cases and crime scene investigation. Officers are provided an opportunity to build positive relationships with the youth in our community. When school is not in session, the SROs help supplement the Patrol Unit and provide directed patrol activities, like bike patrol or a walking patrol in the core downtown area.
