Members of the Community Services Unit perform a variety of duties in our community. The unit is made up of five Community Service Officers (CSO) and three School Resource Officers (SRO). The CSOs are non-sworn staff responsible for municipal code violations which include litter enforcement, parking enforcement, and abandoned vehicles. One CSO position is responsible for administering the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Regulations that are applied to the taxi industry, shuttle services and some of the tour bus providers for the summer tourist industry. CSOs are also instrumental in organizing and planning the logistics for the 4th of July parade and other events in the community.
The three SROs are responsible for providing education and enforcement throughout the Juneau School District in all schools K-12. The educational opportunities officers provide include D.A.R.E. (link to DARE website), pedestrian safety, bike safety, and how to use 9-1-1. Officers also participate in classroom discussions about court cases and crime scene investigation. Officers are provided an opportunity to build positive relationships with the youth in our community. When school is not in session, the SROs help supplement the Patrol Unit and provide directed patrol activities, like bike patrol or a walking patrol in the core downtown area.
BICYCLE REGISTRATION PROGRAM
The Juneau Police Department is implementing a bicycle registration program. Bicycle owners can fill out the Bicycle Registration Form and turn it into the Juneau Police Department. The information from the form will be put into a computer and will be stored until it is needed. If a bicycle is found or recovered, the Juneau Police Department can use the information from the recovered bicycle to match it up with the owner’s information stored in the computer and the bicycle can be returned to the rightful owner.
No program guarantees a 100% recovery rate. The Juneau Police Department does not guarantee that your bicycle will be recovered by filling out and submitting this form.
This is just one tool used to help owners recover their property. Owners should also keep a copy of this information for their own records. The Juneau Police Department encourages people to use bike locks to deter theft of bicycles.
