Juneau Police DepartmentWhat about the children?
A witness to violence is also a victim of violence. A child who you believe does not see the violence, is still aware of the violence and is still affected by violence and the dynamics of abuse in the home. Children who grow up in abusive or neglectful homes experience Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). By increasing the number of ACEs in a child’s life, there is an increased likelihood of becoming involved in domestic violence as an adult – either as a victim or a perpetrator of violence. The more ACEs the more likely a person is to have cancer, shortened life span, substance abuse, mental health and/or health problems. Children will become or do whatever is necessary to preserve family harmony – even if it means sacrificing themselves. This includes assuming unhealthy roles in the family to keep the family together. These unhealthy ways of acting makes them vulnerable to becoming abused or abusive as adults.
