Join a Juneau-Douglas City Museum guide and travel through the heart of historic Juneau circa 1925.  A town that has recently welcomed Alaska’s 11th Territorial Governor and recently finished prolonged and stormy negotiations with the Federal government to purchase land for a permanent Territorial government building.  Churches are firmly rooted in a hard rock mining community that boasts payment of the highest wages in the world and the largest gold production.  Hear the story of the town’s infamous Robert Stroud, aka the Birdman of Alcatraz, who committed his first impulsive murder in Juneau in 1909, as well as the story of Birdman.  Through these stories and more, you will catch a glimpse of Genuine Juneau 1925!

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum Downtown walking tour begins at the City Museum and ends at the “Windfall Fisherman” bear statue.  It is approximately 1 hour long.  The route has some up and downhill and tours through the original town site from the prospective of a 1925 Juneau resident.  Participants will walk from the museum past the Capitol building on Main and turn up Seward and walk to the Russian Orthodox Church.  From the Orthodox Church they will walk to Gold Street and head to Franklin Street.  The tour will walk down Franklin to Franklin and Front Streets.  They will then walk from along Front Street to Seward and 3rd.  The tour will conclude at the bear statue.
