Become a City Museum Volunteer
There are many ways to help out at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Find a job that's right for you.
Individually or in two-person teams, welcome visitors, take admissions, answer questions, and staff the Museum Store. October-April, volunteers may also assist with education tours, clerical projects, or collections projects as available. Visitor services volunteers should be friendly, customer-service oriented, and interested in learning about and discussing Juneau history. Requires basic computer skills, cash handling, and good customer service. Requires cash register training with the Museum Administrative Assistant or Intern. Weekly or bi-monthly shifts available. Positions available now.
Walking Tour Guide:
Take visitors on a trip into Juneau's past by leading the Historic Downtown Walking Tour! Learn about the notable places, people, and architecture of downtown Juneau, including the stories of the Birdman of Alcatraz and China Joe. Requires tour guide training with the Curator of Public Programs and a three month commitment to lead a weekly tour. May-September only. Assist the Curator of Public Programs with afternoon camps for youth ages 8-11. Must be able to join the group in physical activities like hiking, ice skating, and swimming. Occurs twice yearly, during spring break week and in August, and activities vary each session. Experience working with children preferable.
Share your cooking skills by providing refreshments for special receptions or programs, such as exhibit openings, Juneau Museum Day, or Coffee & Collections presentations. Must be done as work at home. Staff will contact Refreshments Volunteers at least one week in advance.
Assist staff with greeting and counting visitors who attend special events. May also assist with setting up chairs or equipment, serving refreshments, keeping galleries tidy, selling Museum Store items, and answering questions. Evenings only, October-April. Available positions are limited.
Gift Shop Crafts:
In conjunction with staff, create craft kits or items to sell in the Museum Store. Examples of items may include handmade stuffed animals, ornaments, embroidery, beading or knitting projects. After initial development, may be done as work at home.
Assist the Curator of Collections & Exhibits with data entry, scanning, photographing, and other collections maintenance and research projects. Requires a one-year commitment to at least 4 hours per month. Collections management training required.
Share your artistic skills by working with the Curator of Public Programs to lead youth or adult art activities. Must have experience in art instruction.
Help spread the word about Museum happenings by hanging posters for exhibit openings, Coffee & Collections lectures, or other Museum events. Volunteers will be contacted at least one week in advance and given the list of hanging locations and necessary supplies. Posters are hung in two groups: downtown and in the valley. Must have own transportation.

The Museum could not keep the doors open without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. We offer volunteers who have contributed at least 20 hours per year the following tokens of appreciation.

Reach a certain amount of volunteer hours and receive special recognition and a gift in thanks for all your help.
To apply, fill out the volunteer application and background check consent form and submit to the Volunteer Coordinator. The Juneau-Douglas City Museum is a division of CBJ Parks & Recreation Department. All adult volunteers are required to submit a background check consent form.
