For over a decade, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum has offered workshops on Juneau history and culture. Utilizing local knowledge and expertise, these one-evening workshops are designed to familarize tour operators and other people who will be interacting with Juneau visitors in the upcoming summer season.
This season we are please to offer two opportunities for interested participants to attend our Juneau History workshop and our Introduction to Native Arts & Culture workshop.
JUNEAU HISTORY & CULTURE with Richard Stokes Instructor Richard Stokes, a 38 year resident of Juneau will share information about Juneau's historic sites, local lore, eye-catching plants, wildlife watching, and much more. After retiring from a 23 year career with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Richard has driven busses and led hikes and whale watches for Gastineau Guiding. He was chosen as Princess Cruises Guide of the Year for Juneau in 2006. The Museum's video, Juneau City Built on Gold, will also be shown during the training. Each participant will receive an informational packet to enhance their own tours. INTRODUCTION TO NATIVE ARTS & CULTURE Instructors Kathy Ellis and Ross Soboleff will present a dynamic session on Native history, art and culture. Participants will gain an understanding of Native art and learn the true meaning of what a totem pole represents and other common misconceptions of Native art and culture. Kathy Ellis, a local shop owner, will lead participants in an activity of real vs. fake art and explain what to be aware of when looking for or purchasing authentic Native Alaskan arts and crafts.
