Major Parking Improvements Coming in 2024

The City & Borough of Juneau is introducing a new system to manage parking permits and enforce parking rules in Spring 2024. The new system will be used at all off-street parking facilities in downtown Juneau, including the Marine Parking Garage (MPG) and Downtown Transportation Center (DTC). No changes are being made to parking rules and parking rates will continue to be adjusted according to the schedule announced in 2022.

The new system uses license plates as virtual permits, allowing customers to purchase monthly/annual parking permits and pay citation online using a credit or debit card. At hourly lots, new pay stations that accept credit cards and coins will replace the existing mechanical cash boxes. Customers will also be able to pay for hourly parking directly from their mobile phone. Permits will continue to be available for purchase in-person and live customer support will be available 24 hours a day.

Additional information about how to use the new system will be provided soon, including new signage, social media posts, additional information releases, and a dedicated website. Please visit the Parking Improvements project page for the latest updates.

Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge Trail) Montana Creek Pedestrian Bridge Closed

The pedestrian bridge over Montana Creek on the Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge Trail) is being closed due to continued erosion of the banks supporting the bridge abutment. The bridge was previously closed in the fall of 2022 after a large storm scoured the bank of Montana Creek and undermined the bridge abutment. Emergency stabilization work was completed at that time and the bridge was reopened for pedestrian use. However, the bank erosion continued this winter and the bridge is being closed due to unsafe conditions.

A barrier is being installed to prohibit bridge access. Please observe the posted warning signs and do not attempt to access the bridge or climb down the river banks, as this will increase erosion. The streambanks and bridge abutment will be evaluated for stabilization and repair.
