The African Svelte: Ingenious Misspellings That Make Surprising Sense

Written by Daniel Menaker
Illustrated by Roz Chast
Non-Fiction

If you're a wordie and/or a Roz Chast (think Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant) fan, The African Svelte will take you to some amusing places you might otherwise miss. For me, the illustrations make this book. If you only look at those, it will "undo stress" at least briefly in your day. Admittedly, I am a huge Roz Chast admirer. The text is less brilliant than the illustrations but organized in a most-easy-to-read style. What I found most off-putting was the many references to what actually might simply be auto-corrects -- until I realized that some days auto-corrects are the funniest thing going and a definite function of our new communications.
