This Is How: Help for the Self: Proven Aid in Overcoming Shyness, Molestation, Fatness, Spinsterhood, Grief, Disease, Lushery, DWritten by Augusten Burroughs
After my dad died, a friend of mine suggested I read a chapter from Augusten Burroughs' self-help book "This is How: Proven Aid in Overcoming Shyness, Molestation, Fatness, Spinsterhood, Grief, Disease, Lushery, Decrepitude & More. For Young and Old Alike." I was apprehensive at first but decided to read the chapter she suggested. Then I read the whole book. As someone who cringes at the term “self-help” I have to admit I loved this book.
Burroughs speaks to readers with honesty and consistency. He gives raw yet humorous advice on how to survive various situations. This is a feel-good book that rejects the notion that self-help has to come in the form of a forced smile and peppy positive attitude. Burroughs encourages readers to deal with emotions instead of smiling them away, to take pain and turn it into art, and to be honest with yourself.
Burroughs offers common-sense solutions for complex situations in life. If you're looking for advice that's raw, brutally honest, and filled with dry humor, then you need this book.
