Abraham Lincoln & Frederick Douglass: The Story Behind an American Friendship by Russell Freedman is history but reads like a story. The book covers Lincoln & Douglass' pre-Civil War childhood to adulthood, and their eventual meeting at the White House in 1863 at the middle of the Civil War. Freedman does an excellent job explaining this difficult era. His use of direct quotes to give historical detail makes this an easy and engaging read. The photos give a picture of what the places and people looked like. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys history or wants to learn more about the Civil War. For younger readers it paints a good picture of what their lives were like in the 1800ís, yet these two great men continue to shape our thinking. Once again itís another extraordinary book by Russell Freedman.
