It is the tail end of the season at the small Swiss Hotel du Lac, and author Edith Hope is getting away from her life in London. In the process, she has a chance to observe the other guests staying at the hotel. Besides being a character study of all the residents of Hotel du Lac, the book answers the question of what Edith, as well as the other guests, will do when they return to their normal lives.
This Booker Prize-winning novel by Anita Brookner is a bit like the work of Barbara Pym, but with more angst.
