Gary Holthaus is the author of several collections of poetry, including Unexpected Manna (Copper Canyon, 1978), Circling Back (Peregrine Smith Books, 1984), and, most recently, If You Were Here I Would Have Hands (Brooding Heron Press, 1999).
He is the former director of both the Alaska Humanities Forum and the Center for the American West in Boulder, Colorado.
He received an Individual Fellowship for Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1990. He has been a commercial fisherman in Alaska, a big-game guide in Montana, a wheat packer for Quaker Oats and a school teacher.
