CCFR News Items RSS FeedLatest News Items Posted on the CCFR Websitehttp://www.juneau.org/ccfr/Multi-Residential Structure Fire 8-21-2010On Saturday, August 21, 2010 at approximately 1900 hours, Capital City Fire Rescue responded to 2196 Lawson Creek Road for a report of a structure fire. Two engines, two ambulances and one ladder truck responded and discovered light grey smoke coming out of the top of the three story multi-family building. The building occupants were evacuated and the fire was quickly extinguished. The fire was contained to the one unit and caused approximately $60,000.00 in structure and contents damage. It took pcrews a couple hours to remove smoldering insulation from the attic space. There were no injuries reported and the building was insured. At this time the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal.Sun, 22 Aug 2010 00:14:53 -0800Residential Structure Fire Response 7-31-2010On Saturday, July 31, 2010, at 2238 hours, Capital City Fire Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire at a residence off of Lake View Court in the valley. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a greenhouse on a wood deck on fire. The fire was confined to the greenhouse, which was less than 3 feet away from the residence roof eave. The fire was reported by a passer by. The occupants were home at the time of the fire and used portable fire extinguishers and a garden hose to knock down the fire. There were no injuries and the damage is estimated at approximately $5,000. The fire was determined to have been caused by smoking materials inside of the greenhouse. Sun, 01 Aug 2010 00:05:22 -0800Residential Structure Fire 24 Mile Glacier Highway, 7-17-10On Saturday, July 17, 2010, at approximately 1:30 pm, Capital City Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 24624 Glacier Highway. This structure was outside of the fire response district, but the response was authorized only for life safety consideration as the home owners were unaccounted for and a vehicle was still parked in the driveway. Upon arrival, fire personnel found the structure fully involved with fire and quickly spreading to other structures and brush. Fire personnel only applied water to keep the surrounding structures and brush from igniting and spreading the fire. The onwers were contacted and accounted for. There were no injuries. The structure was a total loss and not insured. After investigation, it was determined that the most likely cause of the fire may have been electrical. Mon, 19 Jul 2010 08:40:35 -0800Residential Structure Fire 7-10-2010On Saturday, July 10,2010, at approximately 8:30 pm, Capital City Fire Rescue was dispatch to 9367 River Court Drive for a a report of gray smoke from a residence. Upon arrival, fire personnel opened up a vent on the gable end of the roof and found smoke in the attic space. The fire was quickly extinguished. There was fire damage to roof trusses and smoke damage throughout the home. The occupants, who reported the fire, evacuated the home. There were no injuries and the residence is insured. After investigating, it was determined that the fire was caused by a halogen work light left on in the attic from previous work being done that afternoon. The estimate of damage is approximately $15,000.00. The occupants found alternative living arrangements until the home is repaired and cleaned up.Sun, 11 Jul 2010 01:46:21 -0800Residential Structure Fire 7-1-10On Thursday, July 1, 2010, at approximately 2:30 am, Capital City Fire Rescue responded to Spruce wood Trailer Park, Space #87, for a residential structure fire. While en route, dispatch stated that there were occupants still inside, however before fire personnel arrived, the occupants safely escaped the fire. The structure was fully engulfed with fire when personnel arrived. Fire personnel were on scene for about three and a half hours for fire suppression and an additional two hours for investigation. The fire loss is estimated at approximately $100,000 for structure and contents. The structure is not insured. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the fire marshal's office.Thu, 01 Jul 2010 14:28:44 -0800Residential Structure Fire 6-30-2010On Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at approximately 5:05 pm, Capital City Fire Rescue was dispatched to 2760 Douglas Highway for a residential structure fire. While en route, dispatch advised that there were numerous 911 calls reporting smoke and flames visible. The structure was a single family dwelling located on the beach at the end of a long and steep driveway. Access with emergency apparatus was not possible. The fire was contained to the exterior deck, a small portion of the crawl space and some of the interior living space. Damage is estimated at approximately $3,000.00. There were no injuries and there were no occupants home at the time of the fire. The home is insured. After a fire investigation was conducted, it was determined that the cause of the fire was from smoking related materials. Officers from the Juneau Police Department assisted with traffic control during the busy time of day. CCFR would like to remind the public to slow down and use extreme caution when approching emergency vehicles. Wed, 30 Jun 2010 19:12:25 -0800Commercial Kitchen Fire Response - 6/27/10On Sunday, June 27, 2010, at approximately 2:20 a.m., Capital City Fire Rescue was dispatched to 225 Front Street for a report of a structure fire. The structure was the Miner's Mercantile, a two story commercial structure in the downtown area. Upon arrival, fire personnel noted the activation of the building fire alarm system and light smoke from the front entrance. Further investigation revealed the fire had been extinguished just prior to fire personnel arriving. The fire was extinguished by Juneau Police Department Sgt. Chris Burke and Officer Jarrett Mahoney. Both were in the immediate area on patrol when they noticed the fire alarm activated. Both officers investigated and were able to see smoke coming the kitchen on the first floor. Entry was made into the building and a Class K portable fire extinguisher was used to put the fire out. The cause of the fire was an unattended metal pot that was left on the stove. It is believed that there was some cooking oil in the pot and that it had ignited. From there, a small plastic container located directly above the cooking surface also ignited and caused most of the smoke. The kitchen suppression system was activated and final extinguishment was accomplished by the officers. There was minimal damage sustained and the kitchen was closed by the fire marshal until full cleaning was accomplished, an inspection by the State Health Department was scheduled and the fire suppression system was reserviced. There were no injuries sustained and the fire was limited to the cooking surface of the kitchen. Sun, 27 Jun 2010 17:27:27 -0800Firefighters raise $10,870.00 for MDA with Fill the BootThe IAFF Professional Firefighters Union and CCF/R Firefighters went out in the community for the annual MDA Fill the Boot Program. During this two day event the firefighters of Juneau collected $10,870.00 to help with muscular dystrophy research. There has been a long standing tradition of firefighters supporting the MDA through the fill the boot program. We are very proud of the efforts our Career and Volunteer Firefighters have put in on their own time to support such a worthy program. We would like to thank the community for making this such a successful event. Mon, 07 Jun 2010 12:03:03 -0800Cooking Fire 5577 Aisek StreetOn 3-16-10 at approximately 1325 hours, Capital City Fire Rescue Received a report of a structure fire at the Halfway House located at 5577 Aisek Street. The 911 caller reported black smoke, flames and one injured person. Engines-17, 38, Truck-32, R-1, Medic 5, 6 , 5-Chief Officers and approximately 10 Volunteer Firefighters responded On arrival light smoke was seen emitting from the main entrance. There was an adult female lying on the ground coughing and being attended to by a retired JPD Officer. The building maintenance supervisor reported the fire was out. The building was searched and ventilated of smoke and Carbon Monoxide. The fire originated from cooking with oil on top of the stove. The injured person declined medical treatment and was released from the scene. No foul play is suspected. The fire was extinguished with a single ABC extinguisher. The fire was contained to the container on top of the stove. Damage is estimated at less than $1500.00 CCFR reminds people to make sure the address numbers on your buildings and homes are visible from the road. If the numbers can not be seen from the road it could delay emergency responders from locating you. Tue, 16 Mar 2010 16:09:04 -0800Fire at Commercial Signs & Printing 11-4-09 On 11-4-09 at approximately 1240 hours, CCFR responded to a reported fire at the Emporium Mall in The Commercial Signs & Printing Shop. 2 Ambulances, 2 Engines, 2 Chief Officers, Deputy Fire Marshal approximately 15 Firefighters responded to the scene. On arrival smoke was found in the building. Acting Captain, Noah Jenkins assumed command of the incident. The fire attack teams found that some sweat shirts were bound up in a silk screening drying oven. The fire was completely extinguished and the smoke was removed from the building. There was one minor burn injury to a store employee from putting the fire out. He was evaluated by paramedics and released at the scene. Damage was contained to 4 sweatshirts.
