Capital City Fire/Rescue

11-12-2012 - Fire Origin & Cause Investigation - Gastineau Apartments

Capital City Fire Rescue has concluded the origin and cause investigation into the fire that occurred on November 5, 2012, at the Gastineau Apartments located at 127 S. Franklin Street. The fire occurred on the fourth floor of the building and was narrowed down to an apartment on the back corner of the structure. The room of origin was the bedroom and the fire occurred on the floor in close proximity of the bed, which was verified by the occupant that found the fire in that location when they returned home after being gone a short while. Due to the extensive fire damage and the amount of water used for suppression efforts, the cause of the fire is determined to most likely be an unattended burning candle. There were investigators from the Capital City Fire Marshals Office, Juneau Police Department, investigators from the Sitka Fire Department as well as several insurance adjustors and investigators for the property and businesses located inside of the structure. The fire does not appear to be intentional. There were five occupants transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for smoke inhalation and medical evaluation as well as one firefighter that suffered a head injury. All were treated and released. The exact dollar amount in damages has not been determined. The property was insured. Submitted by: Fire Marshal Daniel M. Jager
