Capital City Fire/Rescue

National Arson Awareness Week May 1-7, 2016

The Capital City Fire Rescue Fire Marshal's Office and the Alaska Association of Fire & Arson Investigators would like to announce that the week of May 1-7, 2016 is National Arson Awareness Week. The theme this year is "Preventing Wildfire Arson". While the Juneau area does not typically have a large wildfire problem like other areas of Alaska, we still have them and some are due to arson. The fire marshals have worked with the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement officers in Juneau for a person who was believed to be responsible for approximately 30+ tree fires from 2013 through 2015 involving trees from City & Borough of Juneau and Tongass National Forest property. While most of these fires were contained to the tree of origin, there were fires that occurred during some of the warm and dry months and fortunately there were no large fires created from them and no injuries or other property was damaged. The fire marshals want residents to know that arson is a serious crime, regardless of location, size or property involved. It does not have to be a vehicle or structure that is intentionally burned to be classified as an arson and violators will be prosecuted. Anyone that sees or hears about an arson are asked to contact the Capital City Fire Rescue Fire Marshal's at 586-5322 or Juneau Police Department at 586-0600. Submitted by: Fire Marshal Daniel Jager
