10-27-15 Commercial Structure Fire

On Tuesday October 27, 2015 at approximately 10:13 AM, Capital City Fire Rescue responded to 8415 Airport Boulevard for a commercial structure fire. Upon arrival, fire personnel reported heavy dark smoke and flames inside of a large commercial storage unit with a boat inside. Fire personnel quickly extinguished the fire. The fire marshal's office conducted a fire origin and cause investigation and determined the cause of the fire was due to welding work being conducted. Hot slag material landed in a confined space on the boat deck and ignited combustible materials. The welder tried to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful due to the rapid fire spread. The loss is estimated at approximately $750,000.00 and the property is insured. There were no injuries reported. The welder was able to close a large garage door which dramatically slowed the progress of this fire. Had the welder not done this, the loss could have been several million dollars since there were other businesses using this building. Capital City Fire Rescue wants to remind people of the importance of having a fire extinguisher and how to use it. Submitted by: Fire Marshal Daniel Jager
