Church fire on Sunset Dr

On Tuesday October 20 @ 1258 CCFR responded to a structure fire at Faith Lutheran Church on Sunset Dr. First unit on scene found black smoke coming from 2 main doors of the building. All occupants were outside of the building. Fire crews went inside to confirm fire was extinguished and looked for fire extension. The building had to be ventilated with our Positive pressure fans to remove the smoke thru out the building. The wooden slats on the kitchen ceiling had fire damage and charring. Smoke damage had permeated thru out the building and dry chemical powder from the fire extinguishers had spread out to most of the building. We were told by the occupants that they were heating up some cooking oil in a pot on top of the stove and found it on fire. They attempted to put the fire out with multiple fire extinguishers. One of the parishioners removed the pot of oil from the kitchen and put it outside. Property damage and clean-up is estimated at $40,000. The CBJ assessed value of the church was $1,020,000 The building will need extensive cleaning. It was fortunate that the Kids from the Head start program had already left the building before the fire. The main structure of the building is still intact. The kitchen was the only room that had fire damage. By Assistant Chief Ed Quinto
