Fire at the old Gastineau apts.

On Saturday March 21st, At 6:48pm CCFR responded to South Franklin st at the building formally known as the Gastineau Apt. The first engine crew arrived to find smoke coming from the 4th floor of the building windows and flames coming out of the window on the 4th floor right side of the building. Initial fire engine attack crew stretched a hose line from the engine to the right side of the building. They shot water into the 4th floor window from the outside stairway. Our ladder truck was deployed and used the elevated master stream to shoot water into the front portion of the building windows. The fire was quickly knocked down from the outside. Fire crews with hose lines were later sent into the building to extinguish any remaining fire. After the fire, the Fire Marshalls went into the building to investigate the cause of the fire. At this time the cause is undetermined. No one was found inside the building and no fire firefighters were injured at the scene. Approximately 30 CCFR members responded. Reported by Assistant Chief Ed Quinto ***UPDATE*** The CCFR Fire Marshals Office conducted a fire origin and cause investigation immediately following the fire and have determined this fire to be intentionally set. They are working with the Juneau Police Department on this case.
