Capital City Fire/RescueMulti Family Structure - Fire Response - 1-8-11On Saturday, January 8, 2011, at 9:09 a.m., Capital City Fire Rescue responded to 2800 Postal Way, Riverbend Housing, for a report of a kitchen fire in an apartment. One engine, one laddertruck, one rescue truck, one ambulance and 13 personnel responded. Upon arrival, fire personnel found light smoke from the building eaves. The occupants had evacuated the structure. The fire was extinguished by two neighbors that had used portable fire extinguishers. The fire was contained to the stove in the kitchen. There was one occupant at home when the fire occurred, sleeping upstairs. The occupant was alerted by the smoke alarm and was able to evacuate and call 911. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental. There was a plastic container on the stove that had melted and started to burn. It is believed that the stove was accidentally turned on while placing the large container on top. There were no injuries reported and the occupants were able to move back into the apartment afterwards. Capital City Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone of the importance of having working smoke alarms and portable fire extinguishers in your home.
