Juneau International Airport
City and Borough of Juneau

What are the problems with the Terminal?
The problems with the Terminal are wide-ranging . The most important problems to be
solved are those which deal with the way passengers use the terminal- from checking
in for a flight to claiming bags. There is congestion during the busy times within
the ticket lobby. There is not enough baggage claim area for passengers. The circulation
paths are confusing and often conflict with each other.
After September 11th all domestic airports substantially changed security screening
for passengers. While Juneau meets all security requirements, there are issues with
passenger convenience and proper space desired by the TSA to conduct screening and move
passengers quickly through. The building in its present configuration limits the ability
to adapt to future security changes.
Passenger conveniences such as concessions after security do not currently exist. This
limits the traveling public’s ability to have access to food, gifts, and reading material
prior to boarding flights. It limits the airport’s ability to generate revenue to fund
improvements like this terminal project.
Residents of Juneau and visitors alike agree the terminal is not passenger friendly. In
some areas it is dark and uninviting and does not provide a level of service that airlines,
tenants and users would expect in Alaska’s capital city.
